Book Bites for Kids

I just finished with my live interview with BlogTalkRadio’s Book Bites for Kids, hosted by Suzanne Lieurance. What a treat it was and how quickly our 30 minutes flew by! I found myself laughing a lot (nerves? or am I really that happy all the time? or is it just that us authors don’t get out enough?). Regardless, if you had a chance to listen, I hope you enjoyed it. In a couple of days, I’ll post a link to the archived interview, for anyone who would like to hear it.

In the meantime, please give the BlogTalkRadio’s Book Bites for Kids website a visit–there are so many terrific things to hear!

New Children’s Agent

Ugh…I just got over a four-day migraine. The only good thing that came of it was that one day I was so dopey from my migraine meds that while I talking to my husband, I messed up my wording and accidentally said something quite funny that I think will make for a funny children’s book. Sorry, I can’t share exactly what I said (I never talk about story ideas before I write them because when I do, I lose the enthusiasm for the project before I even put pencil to paper), but suffice it to say that since it was born from a semi-medicated state, it’s gotta be on the humorous side ;-).

Okay, onto more relevant things. Last week, my writer friend
Jill Corcoran announced that she has joined the Ronnie Herman Agency, as Ronnie’s new associate agent. CONGRATULATIONS, JILL!!! Jill is the type of person who is a natural at schmoozing, striking up conversations, and totally in her element in professional situations. And she’s downright nice. Yes, she’s a true extrovert and loves it. As an introvert, I’d feel my air flow expire and want to just curl up in the corner and die if I had to do the job of an literary agent, but I DO admire those who can do it–and Jill is one of them. I wish her the best of luck in her new endeavor >^..^<

Check These Out!

Don’t you love Google Alerts? I don’t have time to peruse all the fabulous blogs out there in cyberland, but with Google Alerts, I can be notified if my name happens to pop up on one. Well, this morning I found my blog address on Cynthea Liu’s blog, “It’s a Spin Thing.” Cynthea has posted a ginormous list of children’s book editors interviews and blogs (inlcuding my Mini-View with Meredith Mundy Wasinger). Definitely—-check-it-out!

And while you’re in the mood to read cool things about the kids’ book biz, check out Stephanie Ruble’s interview with Sara Dobie, public relations dynamo at Sylvan Dell Publishing. As usual, Sara has great advice regarding publicity and how authors can work to promote their books (after reading her interview, I just realized that I don’t have my website address listed on my blog–for shame! I know what I’m doing next).

Happy reading!

How to Make Bear-Shaped Cookies

My recent book, Blackberry Banquet, is a terrific spring and summer title, but that doesn’t mean it has to hibernate for the winter.

I recently saw this video on how to make bear-shaped cookie pops! It’s a fun, kid-friendly cooking project from the Betty Crocker’s Kids Cook cookbook. IMHO, it’s a great activity to do with kids in combination with reading Blackberry Banquet. Mmm…imagine your warm, cozy kitchen, the smell of cookies sweetening the air, as you and your child read Blackberry Banquet together. There just isn’t a better winter indoor treat than a good book with a yummy snack.
And if you do this during berry season, you could even use fresh berries as part of the decorations–a berry bow tie, a littel berry juice drizzled on the mouth, a berry nose, whatever. Get cookie! I mean, get kooky!

Happy reading and eating!

It’s Official: Blackberry is Launched!

I had a nice book launch on Saturday. Not a huge turnout, but lots of fun with the wee folks and their parents who did attend (next time, will someone please remind me when Labor Day is!). The kids (and grown-ups) all seemed to enjoy squeaking, tweeting, slurping, yipping, and chomping along with me as I read the story. Blackberry cookies and candy abound, and there were bear bracelets created and works of art in progress.

And of course, the highlight was the actual “launching” of a stuffed bear into the crowd (didn’t want to take any eyes out with a real book), with the catcher of the bear receiving a free book in addition to getting to keep the bear. (thank you, Dan Hanna, for the launching inspiration).

And then, to keep the magic of my launch weekend going, this morning I opened my email to find that Blackberry Banquet received a lovely review on Stories for Children Magazine. If you haven’t seen it before, please check it out! It’s a great online magazine for kids that has editors with impeccable taste in books ;-).

Thanks again to those who could attend the launch and a HUGE BEAR HUG to those who contributed to the Women’s Center book donation drive. I think there will be a few berry happy kids thanks to the generosity of others.

Gone Fishin’

I’m taking a few days off from blogging in order to recreate (or shall I say,”re-create”). I’ll be catching up on reading, writing and relaxing, but please do join me back in August.

Happy summer!
